Additional Programme
BOOKSA, “TO RUSSIA! TO RUSSIA!” (26th of May 2011 at 6 pm)
“To Russia! To Russia!”, it’s the paraphrase of the youngest of three Tschekov sisters. The panel named “From the concrete of Moscow to Siberian shamans” aims to explore can Croatian people still find an inspiration in cultural and geographical vastness of Europe, as it was the case in times when Yugoslavia existed. Is a travel to Russia today a new ideology or just tourist curiosity? Can Croatians and Russians understand each other without English language? Is there a common “Slavic” mentality?
Participants of the discussion:
Zrinka Matijević-Veličan (film director)
Jerko Bakotin (journalist)
Marko Stričević (journalist)
Damir Žižić (photographer)
Ivana Peruško (professor of Russian literature at Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb)

DOKUKINO ZAGREB – project “CINETRAIN” (27th and 28th of May 2011)
Creating Cinetrain was to bring up-to-date a unique working method, invented by Russian documentary filmmakers in the 1930’s. Film crews, under the guidance of Aleksandr Medvedkin, used to travel throughout the Soviet Union in specially equipped train wagons. Although they were filming the industrial achievements of the regime, their underlying goal was to give the power of speech to people who didn’t normally have the opportunity to get their voices heard. They were shooting and, straight away, edited and screened their movies on the spot to the people that took part in the movies. In 2008, the international workshop aimed at ensuring the legacy of this spirit, but by focusing its interest on the notion of borders. The first subject for filmmakers was: “Did we just cross the European border?” It was the 9500 km ride between Moscow and Vladivostok investigating the border of Europe. In the 2010. the inspiration for the films was “Cultural Neighboring”, examining the relations between former Soviet Republics.
Cinetrain films were shown and awarded at film festivals in Cannes, Nancy, Vladivostok, Karlovy Vary and Sheffield.
